Due to the history, Vietnamese cuisine is heavily influenced by French culinary styles, especially pastries. However, the really-French-style pastry shops (bakery) are mostly located in Hanoi – where not only famous for traditional Vietnamese dishes.
The biggest difference between French pastries compared to other popular pastries style in Vietnam (such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan …) is probably in the ingredients. French pastries use mainly dairy fats instead of non-dairy; and therefore, the quality of the cakes is also more premium than the others.
Here are the three most distinct brands of pastries in Hanoi with French style, based on the following criteria:
- Bakeries of the Vietnamese owners with at least 15 years established.
- The percentage of French pastries is much higher than other cakes at the shops.
- The decoration and display reflect the styles of a French bakery.
- Loyal to French quality from the beginning – based on the recipes and the ingredients used. (Because the shape and size may have been adapted for the local market.)
Nguyen Son Bakery
Nguyen Son Bakery is one of the oldest and most famous pastries in Hanoi. Established in 2003 with the first store at 17A Phan Boi Chau – Hoan Kiem – Hanoi. Up to now, Nguyen Son has 21 stores covering Hanoi and expanded to neighboring cities such as Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh.
Coming to Nguyen Son, you will not only experience the classic French culinary space, but also enjoy the taste of typical French cakes, such as Macaron, Croissant, Cookies and the creamy cakes with fresh dairy and chocolates.

Thu Huong Bakery – Maian Bakers
Founded before Nguyen Son and Anh Hoa, Thu Huong Bakery aimed at an open space and selling more medium products. However, Thu Huong’s high-end pastries are still of French quality, especially the cream cakes line.
Compared to the coverage of Nguyen Son and Anh Hoa, Thu Huong Bakery seems more modest with a few long-established stores, serving brand-loyal customers.
